viable

brand

The smallest complete brand a business needs to work in the real world.
ϟ

Most businesses skip the foundation. That’s the problem.

They go straight to a logo and a website, then wonder why nothing holds together. Without clear decisions underneath, every new piece starts from a guess.

A full brand was never the only option. It got sold like it was.

Small and growing businesses are told to buy everything or nothing. An MVB is the smallest brand that works, with more added as you grow.

An MVB isn’t branding on a budget. It’s the smallest brand that works.

Three things worth knowing before you go any further.

01

It’s the smallest complete brand.

It answers who the brand is for, what it stands for and what must never change. Like an MVP, it stops you wasting effort before you know what works.

02

Strategy first. Identity second.

Two decisions sit under everything: Strategy on a Page and Brand Filters. The other six items express them. Build in that order, the brand holds together.

03

Start where you are. Add as you grow.

Choose the plan that fits your stage. Add more when you’re ready. You don’t start over.

The MVB.
Eight Items, in the right order.

01 — Strategy on a Page

One page.
The whole strategy.

One page holds who the brand is for, what it stands for and what it claims. At Starter it’s a North Star and a first claim. At Special it grows into story, promise, proof and essence.

Diagnose: is your brand working?
Decide. Rebrand, Refine or Reposition

02 — Decide

Now you know the problem. Here’s what to do about it.

Not every brand problem is a rebrand. Not every refresh is enough. Refining, repositioning, and rebuilding solve different problems, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in brand strategy. Make the right call before you build anything.

Rebrand, refine, or reposition

03 — Foundation

Whatever you decide, it won’t hold without this underneath it.

Brand is not a logo or a visual exercise. Most tackle it as one, and that's where the biggest problem lies. What you need is a brand as a system that works underneath the logo. Most businesses have the logo. Almost none have the system. Without it, even the right decision won't hold.

Why a logo isn't enough
A marketing budget pyramid diagram showing cost and priority layers from start to finish, starting at the top with 'Marketing & Campaigns' where most budget goes and maximum spend for campaigns and media buys, followed by 'Content & Channels' with high cost for ads and SEO, then 'Messaging & Copy' with mid cost for copywriting, 'Website & Design' with significant cost built before positioning, 'Logo & Visual Identity' with first spend chosen by preference, and ending with 'Strategy' missing as never defined. The diagram highlights the mismatch of spend versus strategic foundation.

04 — Sequence

And most businesses are building it in the wrong order.

They start with the logo and hope the strategy follows. It never does. Every outside-in brand looks polished on the surface and leaks performance underneath. The sequence is not negotiable.

The sequence most brands get wrong

05 — System

The right order starts here. Six layers. Inside out.

Six layers. Each one built on the one before it. Strategy at the centre, identity and communication built outward from it. Get the layers right and the brand holds — without you policing every decision. The six layers show what a brand is made of. At the centre, onlyness is your essence stated as a position. Essence is the feeling. Onlyness is the claim.

Brand as a Business Operating System
Diagram with concentric circles representing a system from core to outward: The Punch (Onlyness), The Essence (The Emotional Territory), Your Service (Visceral and Narrative), Your Message (Verbal and Visual), Your Identity (Logo, Personality, Story), and Your Experience (Operations, Marketing, Sales).
Venn diagram with three overlapping circles labeled Customer, Company, and Competition. The intersections are labeled as Your advantage (between Customer and Company), Their advantage (between Customer and Competition), Shared capability (between Company and Competition), and Your ownable space (center overlapping all three).

06 — Position

At the centre of it all is one thing only you can own.

Every brand claims to be different. Onlyness is your essence, stated as a position. Verified Onlyness is the version the market agrees with: the single, defensible idea that makes your brand irreplaceable, the position no competitor can credibly occupy. Finding it is the most important work in branding.

Find your Onlyness

07 — Coherence

Built it. Now you need something that keeps it together.

Brand SOAP (Strategy on a Page) keeps your brand-system connected to everything you produce. Your position, your promise, your message — on a single page every brief, every campaign, and every piece of content is written from. Without it, the system drifts the moment the founder steps back.

What is brand SOAP?
Diagram showing progression from hypothesis to final positioning with five stages: 01 Differentiation - sharpen the claim, 02 Reasons to Believe - prove it's true, 03 Insight Statement - make it feel inevitable, 04 Positioning Statement - lock it in writing, and 05 The Kill Test - the final lock.
The MVB: strategic decisions (strategy on a page, brand filters) lead to internal alignment, then identity essentials (logo, colour, typography, system and structure, voice and language, key visual), then external expression.

08 — MVB

And you don’t need the whole thing to get started.

A Minimum Viable Brand is a right-sized brand built in the correct order. It comes in four Brand Plans: Starter, Standard, Special and Scale.

09 — Execution

Your brand is ready. Now make sure your content keeps up.

Content that performs is built in seven layers, in order: Claim, Customer, Content, Connection, Components, Copy and Consistency. The Seven C’s show what each layer does and how to find the one holding yours back.

What are the Seven C’s?
